Oct. 8th-9th Infineon Raceway, Napa CA
It was a beautiful weekend at Infineon Raceway.
The weather was perfect.
The #99 car got some new fenders, hood and grill
after the punt to the wall at Thunderhill, and it
was colorful. Didn’t have time to get it
painted but I didn’t care, it’s not
visible from the cockpit.
I haven’t been to Infineon in years and was
so glad we were able to practice on Friday.
Infineon is one of the toughest tracks out there,
very technical. Another thing I need to work on is
the shifting of this stock car. I am very
proficient at heel toe and with this transmission
you only need to left foot break, breath to neutral
and down shift. Up shift is a breath to neutral and
up. Easy. For me the down shift is something that I
will be working on, and the left foot braking, that
is something I only do in karts, so I’ll be
working on that as well. I know getting that right
will knock off some good chunks of time. And to be
competitive that’s the name of the game. I
didn’t practice this at this event because if
I do that to my Mazda, Boom! There goes the
transmission. So I felt it wasn’t worth it.
But it looks like I might be running the #99 car
next year and not the Mazda. So I have my homework
cut out for me.
I felt very comfortable after the last session
on Friday and was looking forward to a great race
weekend.
Saturday I qualified 10th out of 19 entries. Not
impressed, but confident that I would come along in
stride. In Saturday’s race I finished 8th.
Sunday during Practice I developed a 2nd gear
problem. The crew worked hard on it but the problem
continued. In the qualifying race, I dropped to the
back of the pack, not wanting to mess up the others
race, and not knowing how bad the gear problem was.
So I raced with out 2nd gear and yes, I was slow!
Finished 14th.
Never made the start of Sundays main race. We
backed the car out only to find that the gearbox
would not engage in any gear accept reverse. Back
in the garage I went, still saddled up, with the
car jacked up, the crew under the car, and all I
could see was the ASC racers come around turn 11.
My heart sunk, I really wanted to be out there! The
crew desperately tried to get me back on track, but
to no avail. I took my belt and helmet off and
headed up to turn 2 to watch with JD, Nick and
Ross. I’m glad I did, I got to really see some
excellent driving and some exciting moments. There
are a few things I learned sitting up there
watching, as my heart so wanted to be out on track.
A few new things to work on in my driving
craft.
Next race is at Buttonwillow, Nov 12-13th. We
will be ready.
