Just out, with mixed reviews, is the movie
Jersey Girl. Frankly, I don't think they've
asked any fathers what they think. Especially
fathers raising daughters. But, it wouldn't take
much for any father to transpose the situation to
their own life. Try this on for size.
Rate yourself as being an involved, conscious
parent, including any excuses you might have about
not having enough time. Then, think what you might
have to do differently if your child's mother died
- today. Then, go see the movie. By yourself. After
it's over, spend some time thinking about your life
as a parent and what you might do differently, now,
before a crisis happens along. Hopefully, it will
never happen. However, it wouldn't hurt to make
changes now to be even a stronger influence on you
child's life. We'd like to hear what you have to
say. Click on Feedback on the sidebar after you see
the movie and let us know.
Excerpts of the story line as originally
written by Mike Clark of U.S.A. Today:
It stars an incredible 7 year old Raquel Castro,
with supporting cast of Ben Affleck, George Carlin,
Jennifer Lopez and Liv Tyler.
Affleck is happily overworked as New York's
hottest music publicist until wife Lopez dies in
childbirth. Then he melts down while multitasking
during a Hard Rock Cafe news conference. While
ranting at reporters, he insults client Will Smith,
which gets him banished back to hometown Highlands,
NJ There, seven years later, he sweeps streets and
lives with his dad (creatively case George Carlin)
while raising his daughter. Girl's great
find is young Raquel Castro as the daughter.
Looking as if she really could be J. Lo offspring,
she brings out the best in Affleck. A climactic
school talent show also is inspired, providing the
movie the twist it needs. PG-13.
Kids-in-Mind gives this movie a 5 out of 10 on
sex and nudity, 3 on violence & gore and 5 on
profanity. See http://www.kids-in-mind.com/j/jerseygirl.htm
A man (Ben Affleck) and his infant daughter move
to New Jersey leaving their glamorous life in
Manhattan behind after his wife dies in child birth
and he is fired from his job. The man struggles to
cope with his grief and become a single parent with
the help of his father (George Carlin). He longs
for his old life and continues to try to recapture
the old days by interviewing for jobs in New York.
When he finally gets a job offer he must decide
between that and the family he has created with his
daughter and father in New Jersey. Also with Liv
Tyler, Raquel Castro and Jason Biggs. Directed by
Kevin Smith. [1:43]
SEX/NUDITY 5 - A man and a woman kiss
passionately, take off some articles of clothing
(we see the woman in her bra (cleavage and bare
abdomen), they continue kissing, the man caresses
the woman's breasts, they hide in a shower and a
young girl finds them there. A man and a woman kiss
passionately, and lie back on the floor. Also man
and a woman kiss in other scenes. A woman takes a
man by the hand and says, "we're gonna have some
sex." A woman asks a man about his "pornographic
movie rental practices" when he tries to rent an
adult movie at the video store where she works, she
then quizzes him about his sex life and pornography
during a dinner. A woman talks with a man about
masturbation. A man and a woman dance, the man dips
the woman and they hug. A man hugs a man in a few
scenes. A young boy (5 or 6) pulls down his pants
for a girl of the same age so that she can look at
his private parts (nothing is exposed to us); then
the little girl lifts her skirt to show the little
boy her private parts (again, nothing is exposed to
us). We see a nude baby girl at delivery, and we
see a baby girl's private parts and buttocks while
having her diaper changed. A man is bare-chested
while shaving. A young girl asks her father about
the size of his endowment. Women wear low-cut tops
and dresses revealing cleavage, bare backs and
shoulders. A number of women at a party wear fur
tube tops that reveal cleavage and bare abdomens.
We see sonogram images of fetuses in the womb.
VIOLENCE/GORE 3 - A woman in labor and during
delivery screams and complains of pain, then falls
unconscious and we hear that she has died of an
aneurysm. A man's throat is slit on stage in a play
and fake blood spurts from the wound; there's
another similar scene from a play, which is less
gory (blood does not spurt). We see a baby at
delivery covered with blood and fluids. Two men
yell at each other, a man yells at a woman, and a
man and a little girl yell at each other in a few
scenes. A man yells in frustration. A man grieves
when he's told his wife is dead. A man talks about
not wanting to die alone. A man drives his car in
the path of a street sweeper in order to make it
stop. We see a soiled diaper and people react with
disgust. A man changes a baby's diaper and makes a
face -- reacting to the odor.

scatological terms (3 mild), 12 anatomical terms (2
