Diller, Lawrence, Running on
Ritalin: A physician reflects on children, sooiety and
performance in a pill. In 1997 alone, nearly five million
people in the U.S. were prescribed Ritalin - most of them young
children diagnosed with attention deficit disorder. Use of this
drug, which is a stimulant related to amphetamine, has increased
by 700 percent since 1990. And this phenomenon appears to be
uniquely American: 90 percent of the world's Ritalin is
used here. Is this a cause for alarm - or simply the case of an
effective treatment meeting a newly discovered
need? Important medical advance - or drug of abuse, as
some critics claim? This book correctly described
the "chaos" of the current ADHD diagnosis; the disturbing trend of
blaming children's social, behavioral and academic performance
problems entirely on an unproven brain deficit; and the consequent
enormous and generally inappropriate reliance on Ritalin as the
remedy. This is the most thorough and reliable book available to
help parents and professionals understand and cope with this
crisis. Bantam Books, www.bantam.com

Hartmann, Thom, Attention Deficit
Disorder: A different perception, new ways to work with
ADD at home, work & school. Every once in a while
someone comes along who takes a body of knowledge and tilts it in
such a way that a new view of the information raises up in a flash
of hope and encouragement. The author is one of those people, and
through this book he has finally put the concept of ADD into
a context that we can appreciate. With as many as 10% of the
western world's children suspected of having ADD, I've often
wondered how nature could have made such a mistake. Or was it a
mistake? Perhaps we were just overdiagnosing - labeling more
children as ADD than was warranted. The author's insight into
this phenomenon offers a third alternative - one that both
reaffirms the wisdom of nature and the value of all human beings.
There is something very encouraging in how ADD is presented as a
continuum rather than an either/or phenomenon. The signs of ADD,
which were clearly presented and consistent with current thinking
as espoused by the American Psychological Association, becomes a
mirror in which I suspect many readers will see aspects of
themselves. That these signs are presented as strengths, as well
as areas that may need to be compensated for in our society, will
not only offer encouragement and practical solutions to those who
see themselves on the Hunter side of this continuum, but offer a
fascinating insight into the evolution of humankind and society.

Kelly, Kate & Peggy Ramundo, You Mean I'm Not Lazy,
Stupid or Crazy?! A self-help book for adults with attention
deficit disorder,. There is a great deal of literature about
children with attention deficit disorder (ADD). But, what do you
do if you have ADD and aren't a child
anymore? This book focuses on the experiences of
adults, offering accurate information, practical how-tos, and
moral support to help readers deal with ADD. It explains the
diagnostic process that distinguishes ADD symptoms from normal
lapses in memory, lack of concentration, or impulsive behavior.
The only drawback is that it's 440 pages and I can't picture
someone like myself with ADD ever getting started in it. Oh for a
"One-Minute Manager for people with ADD". A Fireside

Hartmann, Thom, Attention Deficit
Disorder: A different perception. The most
insightful book on ADD. While not the perfect diagnostic starter's
manual for ADD newcomers, this book is an imperative read for all
ADDers who have a negative view of their condition. ADDers aren't
abnormal, they are uniquely gifted individuals in their own right.
The author describes these ideas in a book that belongs in the
hands of every educator, counselor, doctor, and parent. It
empowers ADDers to look at themselves in a new way. Underwood

Pera, Gina, Is it You, Me or Adult
ADD? Stopping the roller coaster when someone you love has
Attention Deficit Disorder. Maybe you know someone who
is: chronically forgetful, disorganized, or procrastination
prone? Perpetually prose to "mis-hearing" or
"mis-remembering"? Habitually doing something to excess --
spending, videogaming, social-networking, talking on the cell
phone or even driving fast - while not doing what they
should be doing? Maybe the core problem isn't laziness,
lack of caring, auditory problems, recklessness or addiction. In
fact, odds are good that the underlying challenge could be a
highly genetic condition: Adult
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD). Before you
dismiss AD/HD as "kids stuff" or "overdiagnosed," consider the
facts: At least 10 million adults in the U.S. have this
highly misunderstood condition, and current research shows it can
greatly jeopardize their health, employment, finances, and even
their closest relationships; yet only one million adults know they
have it. And few of them truly understand it or benefit from
proper treatment. Make no mistake: this is a lifespan
disorder, with serious implications into old age. This is the only
comprehensive and practical guide for adults with AD/HD and their
loved ones, therapists and physicians. It includes evidence-based
strategies for finding effective therapy, reaching through denial
and optimizing medication. Men: be sure to check out Page 77.

Walker III, Sydney, The Hyperactivity
Hoax: How to stop drugging your child and find real
medical help. Is your son or daughter one of the millions of
American children labeled as hyperactive or attention
disordered? If so, this book will show you how to find
real medical help for your child - not just an ADHD or ADD label
and a pill. In over thrity years of practice, the author has
successfully diagnozed and effectively treated hundreds of
children with hyperactive behavior or attention problems.
How? Not by merely masking their symptoms with Ritalin
or other drugs, but by diagnosing and treating their real medical
problems - problems ranging from metabolic and genetic disorders
to heart conditions, infections, anemia, brain cysts, hearing and
vision problems, and toxic exposure (to name just a few). The book
debunks the "label-and-drug" fad that has resulted in massive
numbers of American children being put on powerful and potentially
harmful mind-altering drugs without the benefit of any real
medical diagnosis. If you're seeking a better way to help your
hyperactive or attention-disordered child, you'll find it in this
book, which offers practical step-by-step advice about: How to
determine if your child truly needs medical help. How to find a
good doctor. How to obtain a real diagnosis and real treatment.
How to assert yourself when taking on doctors and school
officials. How to evaluate both traditional and alternative
approaches to treating hyperactivity and ADD. You owe it to
yourself, and to your child, to find out the true causes of
out-of-control behavior, school failure, and other serious
problems written off as ADHD and ADD. For anyone ready to
abandon pat labels and dangerous drugs and seek real medical help,
this book offers new hope and invaluable advice. St. Martin's
