Birth control you don't have to think
about
MIRENA® (levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system) is a unique form of long-acting birth control for mothers. It is placed in the uterus by your healthcare professional during a routine office visit and gradually releases a very small amount of levonorgestrel (one of the hormones commonly found in the Pill) every day to prevent pregnancy for 5 full years.
10 years of European experience
Recently approved by the FDA, MIRENA® has been available in Europe for more than 10 years, and has been used successfully by approximately 2 million women.
Studies suggest several ways that MIRENA® prevents pregnancy. We do not know which of these actions is most important for preventing pregnancy, and most likely all of them work together.
The levonorgestrel in MIRENA® works to reduce the monthly thickening of the lining of your uterus. Because there is less thickening, there will eventually be little or no menstrual flow with your period. This is not harmful and isn't anything to worry about. Once MIRENA® is removed, your uterine lining and menstrual pattern will return to their previous states.
For the first 3 to 6 months, you will experience frequent spotting (a small amount of blood loss) or light bleeding requiring sanitary protection in addition to your monthly period. Your monthly period may become irregular during this time. A few women may have heavy or prolonged bleeding during this time.
After your body adjusts, the number of bleeding days is likely to decrease, and you may even find that your periods stop altogether.
