The Healing Power of Creative
Mourning: Poems. The poems in this new collection deal
with the universal themes of coping with illness, death, grief,
loss, and bereavement. From the preface by Fred and Jan Yager,
"Creativity can help to fill the emotional void caused by a loss.
It empowers you as you take that loss, whether it's because of
terminal illness, death, or separation and create something from
it. But whether or not you write your own poetry, there is a
cathartic benefit to reading the poems of others. They're also
meant to entertain, like a good blues ballad..." The collection
also includes an Epilogue on coping with grief, including selected
references and a list of resources for information or direct help,
including web site addresses. Topics dealt wth in this original
collection include: coping with a miscarriage, illness and
death of a father; a mother, a brother, a grandfather, a friend, a
therapist, and John F. Kennedy, Jr.; the holidays after a loved
one dies; death during the Vietnam War, and more. Hannacroix Creek

Casey, Karen Codpendence and the Power of
Deachment: How to set boundaries and make your life your
own. In this simple and profound book, the author takes us
through the steps of detachment - admitting our need to live our
lives in fear of others' judgment and as if we can control them,
surrendering outcome, forgiving, focusing our attention on what
works. When we give up judging others, we become accounable for
our own behavior and let others - spouse, family, coworkers - be
accountable for themselves. The power of detachment is a power
anyone can claim. It's the power of sanity, of peace, of finding
our own inner strength. www.womens-spirituality.com,

Colvin, Rod, Prescription Drug
Addiction: The hidden epidemic. A guide to coping and
understanding. Millions of Americans are abusing prescription
drugs. Fourteen of the top twenty most abused mood-altering
substances are pharmaceuticals. This hidden epidemic affects
individuals from all walks of life. The author has seen the
problem personalley. At age 35, his brother died as a result of
his long-term addicition to prescription drugs. In this book he
brings to light this misunderstood, underreported national drug
problem. Among the questions he answers: When does drug use
become addiction? Is addiction a moral issues or a health
issue? Which drugs are most abused? Does treatment work?
What about detox, relapse, and follow-up care? What are the most
common ways doctors and pharmacists are scammed? How do state
prescription monitoring programs curb abuse? He balances
compelling anecdotes of recovery with insights from addiction
medicine specialists. He also examines the effectiveness of
electronic monitoring and the ways in which law enforcement
combats diversion at the local, state and federal levels. Addicus

Diamond, Jed, Looking for Love in All the Wrong
Places: Overcoming romantic & sexual addictions.
Love addiction - millions of Americans have it, yet no one will
talk about it. Now comes the startling new book that tells
not only what it is, but how it can be overcome. One in twelve
Americans is a love addict. It affects millions of ordinary
people. It splinters families. I ruins lives. Interweaving
personal stories from many clients, the author explores why people
continue to re-create relationships that don't work - and tells
how to break the patterns that turn the search for romantic and
sexual fulfillment into an addiction. He tells how people get
"hooked on looking for love," and their desperate needs for
security and control in order to protect themselves from yet
another broken heart. He gives specific practical advice combined
with a twelve-step recovery program to help love addicts get free
of the self-destructive nature of their attachments - and finally
find the healthy love they all deserve. Including a revealing
self-test to help readers determine their own level of romantic
addiction, this is that rare work: a book that just may change
people's lives. jed@menalive.com

Diamond, Jed, Warrior's Journey
Home: Healing men, healing the planet. If we
believe the media, the men's movement is something of a joke, and
recovery is a passing fad. Yet if we could get inside the hearts
and souls of the over 80 million men in this country whose manhood
is constantly under attack, and who continue to be confused about
what it means to be a man, we would know a different reality. If
we could feel the pain of the nearly 50 million men who are
suffering from addictions, most in "manly" silence, we would know
a different reality. If we could hear the cries of women who work
with, live with, and love these wounded warriors, and must deal
with their deadly outburst of rage and stony silences, we would
know a different reality. If we could sense the sorrow of the
earth as another bulldozer rips through its flesh in the name of
progress, we would know a different reality. Why is there such a
discrepancy between the view that the issues of men and recovery
are passé and the deeper reality that we have only
scratched the surface? This book explores the origins of
addictions and the ways in which men lost the primal connection
with their masculine selves. Generic recovery programs don't go
far enough to heal these wounds: there is a need for programs that
speak to the unique experience of men. This book details ten tasks
of mature masculinity and seven stages of recovery that men can
use to guide them in their return to a more powerful and authentic
experience of manhood. jed@menalive.com

Federman, Edward, Charles Drebing,
Christopher Krebs. Don't Leave It to Chance: A guide
for families of problem gamblers. From casinos, riverboats,
and horse tracks, to Internet slot machines, sports wagering,
poker nights, and government-sponsored lotteries - the
opportunities to gamble are everywhere. But for 30 million
Americans, these activities are not entertainment they are an
addition. Whatever the form, compulsive gambling can have
disastrous effects in all areas of the gambler's life:
psychological, financial, physical, social and vocational. But the
devastating effects of problem gambling don't stop with the
gambler: family members are often its biggest victims. Like
any addition, it takes its toll on the family by causing
instability, a loss of trust, financial hardship, and ineffective
family dynamics. And despite the myth that problem gamblers are
always young to middle-aged males, adolescents and college
students as well as the elderly are especially vulnerable to this
problem. Based on extensive research at the Center for Problem
Gambling in Bedford, MA, the authors offer supportive guidance to
the family and friends of the problem gambler. In this book, they
provide a step-by-step program of strategies to help readers
overcome the negative hold gambling has on their lives. Beginning
chapters help readers identify the problem, understand its origins
and motivations, and assess the impact in has on their family. The
authors emphasize that family members must first understand and
cope with their own emotional turmoil before moving on to the
problems of the gambler and others. In easy to follow language,
the authors help family members develop a road map for the future.

Fossum, Merle, Men in

scares men away. They won't admit it but it's something about
admitting that I might be in recovery to someone, especially if
I'm not or don't feel I need to be in recovery. The reason I love
the book is that it is filled with stories about men and there

Lee, Bill, Born to Lose: Memoirs of a
compulsive gambler. This book tells the story of a Chinese
American born into a culture where it is not unheard of for
gamblers to place their children as wagers. His family history
includes claims that his own father was sold by his grandfater in
order to pay off gambling debts. He takes the reader on a riveting
journey through a tumultuous childhood where the author's only
connection to his father was through the Maj Jong games he watched
his father play for hours on end. He writes, "Beginning as a
toddler, I would accompany my father after dinner to various
gambling parlors. This was the closest I got to spending "quality"
time with him. When he designated me as his gambling partner, it
made me feel special." From there, he chronicles his first
gambling experiences in grade school, his attraction and loathing
throughout adolescence and adulthood, until he places his final
casino bet as a blackjack table in 1989. His story chronicles the
underworld of gambling in San Francisco's Chinatown - but more
importantly - it provides unique insight into the harrowing
emotional roller coaster and life and death struggle active,
compulsive gamblers face daily. In the preface of the book, the
author lists some startling facts on how pervasive and devastating
compulsive gambling is - not only for the gambler, but for their
loved onces, acquaintances and even the average tax-paying
citizen. But perhaps the most startling fact is the one that
states the dropout rate for Gamblers Anonymous is over 90 percent.
It is in this light that the reader understands how remarkable his
fifteen-year membership in GA truly is. His recovery offers
inspiration and guidance to millions of gamblers and their
families. The gripping story will resonate with all compulsive
gamblers, and the hopeful message creates a universal appeal.

Lee, John, Flying Boy Book II: Journey

read without having read Flying Boy: Healing the wounded

off. This book is about the fears of intimacy, adandonment and
commitment and how to overcome them. It also answers the questions
thousands have asked, "What ever happened to Laurel? What is
John's relationship with his fahter like after having confronted
him? When is there going to be a book written for
Flying Girls (women who can't commit)?" This book
answers all those questions and more. It combines the author's
experience, strength and hope wth insights gained from years of
working with men's groups, Adult Children and his own work in
12-Step programs. It's also the first book that unites the growing
men's movement with the recovery movement. It will help anyone who
reads it to identify an addictive relationship and see that adults
can't be abandoned. Health Communications, 1991

Lee, John, The Wounded Lover: A book
for women raising sons & men coming to terms with their

fathering. Even if their fathers were physically preesnt, they
were emotionally gone. This book shows why many of the
difficulties men face - inability to commit, to give or receive
emotionally, to express feelings - are a direct result of the
"hole left in men's souls" by their father's abandonment. This
book will show men where they come from; help them stop shifting
their woundedness onto women, family, society and the earth; and
point them toward the healing that comes when one is able to feel
good about being a man. It will help women understand men -
fathers, spouses, brothers, sons. It is a rare reading experience

molest trauma lies not sexual perdition, but spiritual perdition.
Physical and psychological therapies can address many parts of the
trauma, but without a spiritual understanding, healing will be

from a baffling personal tragedy into an engagement with the

Minor, Robert, When Religion is an
Addiction. The religious right-wing is on a bender and their
current drink is political. John Bradshaw describes the "high"
someone gets from feeling righteous as similar to the high of
cocaine. There's a recognizable difference between addictive and
non-addictive religion. Crucial is the conservative Christian
teaching that people are basically so evil and lost that they
deserve eternal, unimaginably abusive punishment from someone they
are told is really a loving heavenly Father. Religious addicts
blame God for their beliefs and activities. That eliminates
personal responsibility for the addiction and its results.
Addictive religion is often used to cover sexual addiction. The
old "nice" liberal response that's been tried again and again
hasn't worked. Remove the addict and the addiction from the
driver's seat in our society and lives, through non-codependent,
non-co-addictive strategies. This book will definitely help you
"find the way." www.fairnessproject.org,

Oarc, John, What Ever It Takes, God: The
most difficult things for men to survive. In this unique and
true personal account of life after childhood traumas such as
molestation, divorce and mental abuse, the reader will be able to
look inside the mind and life of a survivor. The reader will gain
insight into the struggles one faces from childhood to adulthood
after the trauma. This book courses through self-destruction,
self-injurious behavior, self-help, and professional counseling.
Experience life through the eyes of the survivor as only he can
describe with true accuracy. Professionals have published
regarding male molestation, but only a few survivors have written
books concerning their life experiences, and these books stand
alone. No one can accurately bring the content to life like the
survivor, and this book undeniably stands alone in writing style
and substance. Health care providers can gain an enormous amount
of clinical insight. Pastors, parents, significant others, famaily
membeers and survivors will be able to develop a vast amount of
helpful information to assist in coping and healing. Even child
predators should be able to understand the devastation that lay
ahead of the victims: to see the true destruction that lay in
wait for the child could be a deterrent and possibly save lives.
This book discusses pornography, adultery, poor copin mechanisms,
addictions, anxiety, depression, codependency, divorce, low
self-esteem and more in vivide detail, with the confidence that
many may find hope and healing. Author House, 2006,

Preston, Dr. John, Survivors: Stories
& strategies to heal the hurt. Shock. Grief.
Unbearable pain. You strugle to cope with emotional distress, but
a common misperception sabotages your efforts: You think you
shouldn't feel the way you do. Add to this mix a sense of shame,
self-blame, and the notion that "I am totally alone with this
experience," as many other men feel, and you've got a recipe for
alienation, lonelinesss, and prolonged misery. The very first step
to take in emotional healing is to become aware of and to
acknowledge that, This is human stuff...I sure don't have to
like it, but it's real, it's normal, and it matters. You are
not alone in your pain. This book looks at the lives of four
Survivors, two women and two men, who've gone through some rough
experiences and are plagued by significant emotional despair. They
can't just ignore it - their feelings are dominating their lives.
These are not cases of mental illness, but examples of ordinary
human beings living through painful times, who learn the
strategies for tapping into the inherent capacity to heal from
deep emotional wounds. Impact Publishers, www.impactpublishers.com

Rogers, Barb. Keep it Simply &
Sane: Freeing yourself from addictive thinking. Making
healthy choices - changing the things we can, accepting those we
can't - is a daily practice. Inspired by the 12-step saying, "Life
is simple, it's people who are compliaced", the author points out
that it's pretty easy to tell ourselves lie upon lie as we explain
away bad behavior associated with drugs, alcohol, food, sex,
work...whatever, in an attempt to feel better about our
complicated lies. And of course we can't do anything to simplify
our lives because we're too busy keeping up with out complicated
lives, so we drink, smoke or shoot, to seek release in
inappropriate ways to relieve the complications. But we never do.
Through the telling of her own story and that of fellow travelers,
she encourages readers to wait, stop, hold the phone. Start with
Mentally Simple (the opposite of Stinking Thinking) and just do
it. Start small, "Grab a mental flashlight" and follow her lead to
discover what you were thinking and how you might think
differently. Offereing 24 simple ideas in four sections (mind,
emotions, spirituality, physicality), along with strategies and
exercises to introduce them into your family life, this book is
for people on the simple path to wellness, for people who simply
want to take charge - to change the things they can change, accept
the things they cannot change, and learn to know the difference
without operatic, addictive song and dance. Conari, www.redwheelweiser.com,

Rogers, Barb, 12 Steps that Can Save Your
Life, Real-life stories from people who are walking the walk.
Clean and sober twenty days or twenty years - it makes no
difference. We all need a little help every once in a while. The
author has been sober for a long time. And she knows that doesn't
make a difference - what makes a difference is that she's clean
and sober today. This is her newest book. It offers true stories
from real-life people. Their addictions have led them to a 12-step
program. Yet, in working the program, they have found, as the
saying goes, that things are simple but not always easy. The
important thing - no matter what difficulties we have with any of
the steps - is to keep working the steps, as many times as it
takes. There is no perfection, there is no goal, there is only
walking the walk, one day at a time. She offers down-home sensible
advice, along with stories a struggling reader can identify with.
Twelve-step programs are neither cult, curse, or cure. They work
because they are ongoing, because the focus is inward and outward,
and because people recognize that their lives are better when they
work them. Conari Press, www.redwheelweiser.com,

Rogers, Barb, Twenty Five Words: How
the serenity prayer can save your life. These twenty-five
words are the bedrock prayer of the worldwide Alcohoics Anonymous
movement, a movement that has saved and improved millions of
lives. Here, the author tells her story and invites readers to
take a tough, loving look at their own. There are some things we
should accept, period. We shouldn't take them personally. We
shouldn't whine or scream or go off on a tear. A then there are
some things we can change, and we should probably take a look at
those as well. And, the real trick, the one that comes from years
of saying the prayer and letting its healing principles sink in,
is knowing the difference. Red Wheel/Wsier, www.redwheelweiser.com,

Shulman, Terrence Daryl, Something for
Nothing: Shoplifting addiction and recovery. The author
is a foremost expert on theft addiction and disorders. Shoplifting
is a crime but is often a cry for help. Most people who steal are
not criminals, but good, caring, honest people who fall into these
behaviors as a way to cope with life's stresses. For many,
stealing becomes an addiction for which there is little hope for
change without effective and sensitive intervention. This is the
first book written on this subject by a recovering shoplifter and
the first book which considers shoplifting as an addiction rather
than an impulse control disorder, kleptomania or a condition which
must be treated only with medication, therapy or both. Hopefully
this book will inspire people to form self-help groups throughout
the country and the world where shoplifting addicts can receive
and ultimately give help. Infinity Publishing, infinitypublishing.com,

Sinister, Bucky, Get Up: A 12-step
guide to recovery for misfits, freaks & weirdos. This
book is a tough-love, 12-step approach to getting sober for anyone
who would be mortified to be caught reading a recovery book with a
picture of a field of flowers on the cover. Admit you are
powerless over alcohol (or smack or meth or whatever). Ask for
help and then rebuild your self-image as a tough guy without the
whisky drinking, dope shooting, excuse making that got you to this
point. Take on the concept of the Higher Power. It can mean a lot
of things - Thor and metaphor among them. Find a sponsor. The
author shares the stories and the steps that come from the
self-identified scumbags who just might save your life. redwheelweiser.com,

Wolinsky, Stephen, Trances People Live: Healing approaches
in quantum psychology. At last, the missing piece of the
dysfunctional puzzle. It is not enough to understand or even
relive our childhood traumas. The author shows us how we continue
to recreate those traumas in our adults lives and how to stop
creating them. Every uncomfortable emotional state, and many
psychosomatic symptoms, are also states of trance. Trance is the
"glue" that holds the problem in the present moment. Learning to
identify the kind of trance state beneath a problem or symptom
gives us the tool that finally dissolves the glue. This book
offers a gold-mine of resources for those who suffer from
dysfunctional patterns of behavior or for anyone who feels stuck
in an undesirable emotional or addictive state. Learning to step
out of the trance states that create our problems and syumptoms is
to learn to step into the present moment at last free of the
baggage from our past. Bramble Company, 1991,
