Genital Integrity (7th International Symposium on Human Rights and Modern Society). Georgetown University Conference Center, Washington, DC. The symposium will focus on the genital rights and body integrity of all children. International experts will address medical, legal and human rights aspects of male and female genital cutting, the right of children to genital integrity, and social activism for cultural change. All presentations in English. $375+Room & Board. NOCIRC, POB 2512, San Anselmo, CA 94979 nocirc@cris.com (4/4-7/02)

Children's protection from unnecessary genital surgery and ritual scarring varies from country to country, and culture to culture. While most countries provide protection, either in the form of laws or social customs, the United States still practices gender bias by protecting girls but not boys.

"We are focussing on the rights of every child to an intact body," said NOCIRC director Marilyn Milos. "We are attempting to secure the child's inalienable rights as set forth in the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. If we were cutting off other normal body parts of non-consenting minors, we would be defending their right to that body part, too. The real question is: Why is it that the sex organs are being cut off?"

This year the symposium will coincide with the Genital Integrity Awareness Week (GIAW), held annually in Washington, DC, during the first week of April, Child Abuse Prevention Month. Sponsored by the International Coalition for Genital Integrity (ICGI), the GIAW promotes genital education, legislative-lobbying efforts, and includes demonstrative marches. Dr. Rio Cruz, Director of the International Coalition for Genital Integrity, states, "By gathering our collective wisdom, we are formulating strategies for reaching out to the families and communities who mistakenly believe that there are benefits to male infant circumcision." Currently, about 85% of parents worldwide protect their boys from circumcision and 97% protect their girls.

GIAW's goals for this weeklong event are to:

NOCIRC has more than 80 regional centers throughout the United States, an more than 20 throughout the world. It sponsors the biennial International Symposia on Genital Integrity. The sixth symposium was held at the University of Sydney, Australia, 2000. NOCIRC is a non-governmental organization (NGO) in Roster status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.
