Though initial interviews with the victim indicate that their relationship was consensual, it will not deter the Sheriff's Office from pressing charges against Redfern.

In 2005, Pamela Rogers received an eight-year sentence for having sex with a 13-year-old student. She later sent suggestive photos to the boy and got two years added.

Jennifer Schultz North Dakota school teacher Jennifer Schultz is charged with sexually assaulting two of her students after a group of students arrived at her home and asked if she would like to drink vodka with them. Authorities say that after a few drinks, two of the boys went up to Schultz's room, where the teacher allegedly had sex with one boy while the other watched.

Wendie Schweikert, 36, of Belton, South Carolina. Schweikert, an elementary school teacher, was arrested and charged with two counts of criminal sexual conduct with a minor, Laurens police said. The former fifth-grade teacher accused of having sex with her 11-year-old student was ordered held on $100,000 (84,060) bond. She was sentenced to 10 years in prison after pleading guilty in 2007

Leah Shipman was arrested in 2009 for having an alleged sexual affair with a 15-year-old student in North Carolina. But prosecutors were forced to drop the case in 2011 when Shipman and the then-17-year-old got married. Under North Carolina law, a husband cannot be forced to testify against his wife.

Pamela Smart received a life sentence for plotting to kill her husband after he was shot in 1990 by a 16-year-old student with whom she had a relationship.

Amanda Sotelo, a 35-year-old married woman, was a substitute teacher who had a months-long affair with a 14-year-old boy, police in Texas said. She learned she was pregnant, allegedly with his child, during a visit to the emergency room in September 2012. Police charged her with indecency with a child, but she claims that she and the boy are in love.

Psychological Impact on underage boys

"It's a violation of a dual role that the teachers put the student into - the teacher-student role and the sexual partner role," Rivas said. "Dual-role relationships usually don't work out. They are flawed from the beginning."

Rivas said that even though a teen-ager may view having sex with an older woman as harmless, or even desirous, such a relationship is not healthy and can manifest itself later in symptoms such as low self-esteem and depression.

"It does not allow the underage boy to go through the usual age-appropriate sexual discovery with his peers, and that pushes him ahead to a phase in development that's long beyond where he ought to be."

Elayne Savage, a California-based psychotherapist who lectures and holds seminars throughout the country on the effects of abuse, said such relationships are a form of sexual abuse.

"Trust is particularly affected," Savage said. "As an underage boy, he's not going to know that now, but when he's 25 or 30 and looking for a relationship and he's had sex with a woman much older than him when he was younger, it might then have a huge impact."

Debra Lafav's husband, 25-year-old Kristian, has finally filed a divorce petition in Hillsborough County Circuit Court (FL) saying that his marriage to wife Debra, 23, is "irretrievably broken." He is also seeking a restraining order against his estranged wife in a bid to protect various assets and to keep her from opening his mail. Debra Lafave is facing a variety of felony charges for allegedly having sex with a 14-year-old male student from the middle school where she taught reading. She told the boy that she was "turned on by the fact that having sexual relations with him was not allowed."

Teacher arrested in Mexico. Allegedly fled Neb. with boy, 13

A female teacher was in FBI custody yesterday as federal and local prosecutors sought to determine how they would handle charges alleging that she ran away with a 13-year-old boy, taking him across the border into Mexico.

The boy, Fernando Rodriguez, was reported to be in the care of relatives in Mexico, and his family in Nebraska was trying to contact him.

"I need to find out what's next," said the boy's aunt, Laura Rodriguez, who said she still had not talked to him about seven hours after learning he had been recovered.

Kelsey Peterson and Fernando were apprehended by Mexican authorities without incident. Her car had been spotted crossing into Mexico on Tuesday.

"I'm really relieved, especially that the individuals are well and unharmed," Dawson County Attorney Elizabeth Waterman said.

It was not immediately clear where Peterson was being held. Customs and Border Protection spokesman Vincent Bond said Peterson was taken to the border station at Calexico, Calif., and positively identified through her fingerprints, then left the station with FBI agents.

An FBI spokeswoman did not immediately respond to a call seeking comment yesterday.

A judge issued an arrest warrant Monday charging Peterson with kidnapping, child abuse, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Peterson also faces federal charges, filed Thursday, that include transporting a minor across state lines or a foreign border for sexual activity, US Attorney Joe Stecher said.

Stecher said he didn't intend to double-prosecute Peterson, and would work with Waterman to decide in which jurisdiction she would face charges.

Peterson and the boy fled after police began investigating whether the pair had an intimate relationship, authorities said.

Court documents showed authorities had recovered several e-mails and letters in which Peterson and the boy professed their affection for one another.

In letters, the boy called Peterson his "Baby Gurl" and said their relationship was "just not about the sex but that it was pretty good," according to the court documents.

The Associated Press generally does not identify people who may be victims of sex crimes, but the boy's name had been publicized as police searched for him.

Fernando Rodriguez was an eighth-grader at Lexington Middle School, but district Superintendent Todd Chessmore said Rodriguez had been in Peterson's sixth-grade math class. He said he placed Peterson on paid administrative leave on Oct. 25.

Peterson's car crossed into Mexico on Tuesday at San Ysidro Port of Entry, which separates San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico, Lexington police said.

Former Axtell coach out on bond

What had been school yard rumors among students at Axtell High School for weeks was confirmed by Sheriff’s Deputies on Tuesday. They arrested one of the school’s teachers, Heather Tindle, for buying students beer in early February. “Coach Tindle had rode home with some boys after a basketball game and during that ride, they agreed to meet up later,” said investigator Brad Skaggs. On that bus ride investigators say Tindle and the five boys made plans to go out drinking, they say they met up later that evening at the Highway 84 and 31 split and piled in Tindle’s car. Investigators say they put down 24 beers in all, while driving along Highway 31 and while parked in a remote location off the highway.

Axtell ISD administrators aren’t speaking publicly about the action they’ve taken. “From what I understand, speaking with the school officials, they did an internal investigation and based on the information they obtained from these students, they called her in their office and asked her to resign and she has done that,” explained Skaggs. But this may not be over, investigators say there are other allegations circulating about what happened that night with Tindle, and while they won’t confirm what they are, they are confirming an investigation is also underway to find out if they are true.

Tindle is out on $5,000 bond, if convicted on all five counts of furnishing alcohol to minors, she could be fined as much as $20,000 and could also spend up to five years in jail.

Meet Shelly Lowery. The 28-year-old high school English teacher was throwing a rowdy little house party early Sunday morning when neighbors called police with a noise complaint. When cops arrived at Lowery's Texas home, they found seven teenagers (including kids aged 14 and 15) partying with teach, whose living room was strewn with open beer cans, according to this Brenham Police Department report. And, in a homey touch, a pornographic video had been playing on the television. Lowery, who was hit with misdemeanor charges of furnishing alcohol to minors and displaying harmful material to her underage guests, was released from the Washington County Jail after posting bond. A teenager whose scandalous May-December affair has landed a Hamptons school psychologist in jail said he doesn't want the 45-year-old seductress to face charges.

"She really didn't do anything to hurt anybody," said the 17-year-old victim, whose name is being withheld because police regard him as a rape victim.

"I wasn't like against it or anything. It just kind of happened," the teen told the Daily News in a telephone interview from his new home in Jacksonville, N.C.

Diane DeMartini-Scully, 45, the school shrink at East Hampton Middle School, is charged with third-degree rape for two alleged sexual encounters she had with the teen, her former neighbor in Mattituck, L.I., last May.

The boy was 16 at the time, and in New York a 16-year-old cannot legally consent to sex with an adult.

The boy's mother told The News that she has learned that DeMartini-Scully also allegedly encouraged the boy to have sex with her 13-year-old daughter - the boy's girlfriend - and that the psychologist supplied the young couple with condoms.

The mother wants DeMartini-Scully prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

"I think it's disgusting that she took the vulnerability of a 16-year-old and used it for her own sick sexual desires," said the 36-year-old mom. "A woman in her position should not be having any sort of feelings toward somebody who is 16."

The teen said he was unsure how many times he and DeMartini-Scully had sex. But he remembered the first time.

"She would be like, 'You want to lay down in my bed and watch TV?'" said the boy.

"That's how it happened the first time. ... We pretty much did everything. I was like 'Dang, what the hell am I doing?'"

The psychologist, due back in Suffolk County Justice Court in Southold tomorrow, had hinted to the boy that she and her husband had marital problems, he said.

In October, DeMartini-Scully was nabbed in Onslow County, N.C., on charges that she paid a secret visit to the teen's new home and kidnapped the boy and his younger sister, giving them alcohol and marijuana.

She was arrested in Suffolk last Saturday, accused of having sex with the boy when his family still lived there.

DeMartini-Scully's attorney, John Strode, did not return calls for comment.

"Sex Scandal Escalates, Former Teacher Arrested Again"

Turner was convicted originally on 4 counts of sexual battery by an authority figure and was sentenced to 8 years in jail. She ended up serving six months behind bars, was released in February and was placed on probation, with conditions.

The court said it has proof that she has consistently violated those conditions. According to court papers acquired by News 2, Turner is accused of electronically communicating with her 13 year old male victim or his family on numerous occasions beginning in early March and continuing through last week.

According to the amended warrant, Turner sent text messages to her victim on March 19 that read, “Do you still love me? Are you still waiting or do you want me to try to move on with my life? I miss you so much I wish I could talk to you." Prosecutors also said they have proof thatturner sent close to 20 e-mail videos to the boy. Authorities said that Turner was naked in some of the videos and involved in sexual activity.

Turner's Defense Attorney is Peter Strianse said she is upset and concerned. He said she feels badly that she has disappointed her parents. District Attorney Dale Potter said he views Turner as a sex offender. “She a threat she deserves to be in jail,” he said.

According to court documents, Turner used a cell phone registered to the Fentress County School System to many of the communications made with the student. A woman at the school system confirms that Turner'sfather works at the school system and they are aware of the situation.

Strianse, Turner’s attorney, said he considering a psychological evaluation for his client. The prosecutor said it is very possible this new information could lead to even more charges against Turner.

Former Coach Charged with Unlawful Sexual Conduct

Jessica M. Spain, 26, last known address 122 Gregory Drive, Newark, was arrested Friday after a Newark police officer witnessed Spain kissing a 16-year-old girl in the back parking lot of the high school, court records show.

In the two days after the incident, a Newark Police detective interviewed the girl and Spain and learned that alleged sexual conduct took place between Aug. 1 and Oct. 5, when the girl was 15 years old.

Spain allegedly admitted to the crime, a third-degree felony, and said that she was the girl’s softball coach last season, court records show.

Spain was taken to the county jail, and was released after a family member posted bail.

Newark High School Principal Jesse Truett said because Spain did not sign in at the office, high school staff notified police immediately.

“Anybody that comes on campus needs to sign in at the front office. That’s a rule for anybody, not just her,” said Truett, who did not know Spain personally.

According to school records, Spain was employed for the ‘03-’04 and ‘04-’05 school years, and worked with two other assistant softball coaches and a head coach.

Her contract ended in the spring of 2005 after head coach Louie Chapman left for another job.

A new head coach has been chosen, who will pick his own assistant coaches before next spring.

Chapman had written an evaluation praising Spain at the end of the ‘04 season: “Players respect and love Jessica, as she relates very well to them. She has patience with them.”

For Truett, acting quickly by calling police was in the best interests of his students.

“Whenever a situation like that happens it makes you think about what is going on,” he said. “It makes you realize anything can happen. The school is always going to be proactive. If there is a situation where something could happen, we’re going to contact the police.”

Vero woman charged with having sex with minor

A 38-year-old Vero Beach businesswoman who allegedly developed a sexual relationship with a teenager who plays on her son's sports team was charged Friday with unlawful sexual activity with a minor.

Sheriff's investigators charged Denise H. Harvey, the owner of a title company, with seducing a 16-year-old boy during a three-month period in which she flirted with him on the telephone, then visited his home, where they engaged in sexual intercourse.

Indian River County Sheriff's Detective Todd Finnegan said investigators became aware of the situation after a coach learned about the relationship Tuesday and reported it to a school resource officer.

Finnegan said authorities will pursue the case vigorously, especially because a younger sister of the teen accidentally walked into a bedroom while the woman was engaged in sex with him.

"The young girl was traumatized," Finnegan said. "You hear people make jokes about an older woman having sex with a young boy, but he's still a victim, and it's still a crime for someone over 24 to have sex with someone under 18."

Harvey, who owns Nationwide Closing & Title Services LLC, did not cooperate with officers when they questioned her, Sheriff's spokesman Deputy Jeff Luther said.

However, officers developed a case against Harvey by recording a telephone conversation the teen had with her Thursday, in which "the defendant made admissions to having sexual intercourse with the victim," Finnegan said.

On Friday, the teenager wore a hidden recording device during a meeting set up by investigators at Indian River Mall. Harvey was arrested after the meeting, during which she also made references to their sexual relationship.

Finnegan said that in 12 years as a sheriff's detective, this is the first case he recalls in which an older woman was charged with seducing a minor.

"His parents were very upset about it," Finnegan said. "I asked him if he wanted to go through with this because he would have to testify in court, and she could go to jail. He said he is fine with it."

Harvey, who is married and lives in the 6300 block of 65th Street, allegedly began the relationship in late January, when she gave the teen her cell phone number and flirted with him during telephone conversations. In early February, Harvey allegedly drove to the boy's home while he was alone and performed oral sex on him.

After buying condoms for the teen, the woman allegedly drove to his residence on at least two other occasions to have sex with him.

If convicted of the second-degree felony, Harvey could face up to 15 years in prison. Telephone calls placed to her home and office were not answered.

Detective Thomas Raulen said the case "will be treated the same as if it were a male suspect and a female victim, because the severity of the crime is the same.

"We hope the boy can move forward and lead a normal life, but this could affect him."

Atlanta Middle School Teacher Arrested

Investigators in Atlanta say it came after a parent complained about some inappropriate conduct between the teacher and a 13 year old boy.

30 year old Julie Davis surrendered to Atlanta Police Tuesday morning.

Chief Mike Dupree says she`s been charged with furnishing alcohol to a minor.

Dupree says allegations surfaced about three weeks ago at Atlanta middle school where Davis teaches.

Police say a parent of a 13 year old student filed a complaint after hearing that her son was given alcohol.

The school district immediately suspended the teacher and then contacted the Atlanta police department.

Chief Dupree says investigators interviewed-several witnesses and gathered enough evidence to issue a warrant for Davis`s arrest.

But beyond that, authorities and school officials are not releasing many details.

News Channel six spoke to Davis before she was arrested and she declined an on camera interview, but she did say that the allegations against her are ludicarous and she`s sick about the whole situation.

It didn`t take long before word of the arrest got around to parents.

Davis was booked into the Cass county jail, but is now free on 2,500 dollar bond.

Salinas teen claiming to be vampire sentenced for molesting girl

Erin Shatraw, 18, was convicted on March 5 of one misdemeanor count of child molestation.

A jury found she was not guilty of felony sexual assault.

Shatraw apparently claimed to be a vampire, telling the 14-year-old female victim that she would cast a spell on the girl and her family if she didn't engage in sexual activity.

Thelander said the victim had testified that she noticed Shatraw dressing more and more in black, adding to her beliefs that the woman was a vampire.

The girl also testified that she did believe Shatraw could cast spells when the molestations occurred in July.

Shatraw was a friend of the girl's mother and had known the victim for more than a decade, according to Thelander.

A sitter removes her clothes at a 4-year-old's request. Now a debate rages: Is it forgivable?

ST. PETERSBURG - To many in the Old Northeast neighborhood where Sarah Slicker lived and babysat, she was a Mary Poppins-like figure with a brilliant smile, bubbly disposition and a natural ability with children.

Slicker began babysitting at age 12. She taught Bible classes, helped with Sunday school and worked in the nursery at First United Methodist Church. Her church awarded her a college scholarship and she graduated from Florida Southern College with a degree in pre-K education.

She hoped to become a child psychologist.

So when a Snell Isle family that attends First United Methodist was looking for a nanny, a church employee recommended Slicker.

The arrangement lasted for three months until the day in January 2004 when Slicker made a life-changing mistake.

She was fast-forwarding through a James Bond movie, Die Another Day, when a sex scene appeared. The 4-year-old boy in her care demanded she take off her clothes. Slicker complied, and let him touch her.

The incident shocked those who knew the 23-year-old Slicker. It also split a neighborhood and a church. Some rallied behind her, refusing to believe it happened. Others felt she should go to prison. Parents who had used her for babysitting quietly grilled their children, some of them already in college.

Her outrageous actions became the buzz of the Old Northeast and fodder for Internet bloggers around the world debating what kind of punishment was enough.

Today, Slicker sits in jail, labeled a sex offender. She maintains her actions were not sexual, but a horrible moment that was the result of so many other horrible moments. She snapped from overwork, stress and depression.

"I knew this was wrong," she said during an interview. "It was really hard, it's still hard, to accept that I'd do something so crazy. . . . People are always like, "What were you thinking?' and I say, "I wasn't.' "

The boy's mother said Slicker is a sexual predator whose innocent demeanor makes her all the more dangerous.

"She's young. She's energetic. She has childhood experience with children and she's the biggest threat to mothers and parents in this world because she's not going to be assumed a predator," said the mother, whose name is being withheld to protect her son's identity.

A gynecologist, she walked in on Slicker and her son - and she can't get the image out of her head.

Slicker didn't want the job at first, even though she was trying to save money for graduate school. She already was babysitting for two other families three nights a week, helping her grandmother, and petsitting for another family.

But the mother was persistent. She and her husband, who sells medical devices, were busy career people who needed someone who would be flexible to look after their 4-year-old son and his 15-month old sister.

Slicker admitted she wasn't good at saying no.

She took the job in September 2003, she said, understanding it would be 35 to 40 hours a week. But before long, it grew to 55 to 65 hours a week. The family said there was never an agreement that the hours would be limited, and Slicker was allowed to have the other jobs as long as it didn't interfere with their needs.

Soon, Slicker estimated, she was working 100 hours a week on all the jobs combined.

She became frazzled and forgetful. She locked her keys in her car at least four times. She would go days without showering or changing her clothes. She gained 30 pounds.

"Part of the problem was that I had a lot of guilt from feeling overwhelmed," Slicker said. "It was so difficult for me to admit I was in over my head. I've wanted to be a parent my whole life and it was hard for me to admit I couldn't handle a parent's schedule."

The 4-year-old's mother said she noticed Slicker appeared more disheveled, but chalked it up to adjusting to the family's schedule.

Friends and family, however, urged Slicker to get out. Two other mothers offered to pay Slicker the $400 to $450 a week she was making in the nanny job for far fewer hours. She refused, saying she had committed to the family for a year.

"I thought she was going to jump off the Skyway Bridge," said Elizabeth Johnson, 38. Slicker babysat her three children for more than a decade. "She looked awful. She went from everyone's favorite babysitter to a complete zombie. She was a shell of a human being. It was a rapid decline."

Slicker also was struggling with the 4-year-old boy. In December 2003, friends and parents like Johnson said Slicker complained to them that he had grabbed at her breasts and her buttocks.

The boy's mother acknowledged her son exhibited the behavior before Slicker arrived, but said it increased during her tenure.

Slicker wasn't sure how to deal with it all.

On Jan. 2, 2004, the boy's father took his son out fishing with friends. The two returned home in the afternoon so Slicker could get the boy ready for a tennis lesson.

The boy asked if he could watch the James Bond movie. The 35-year-old father, recalling the moment in a deposition, said Slicker mentioned it might be too violent.

"I said, "Sarah, you take control of the remote. I want you to fast-forward through the parts that - you've got 15 minutes maximum, you know, so probably you're going to get started on it and leave, but that's fine."

Slicker fast-forwarded through the movie's dicey parts, but the boy saw a sex scene, she said. He turned to her and demanded she take off her clothes.

Slicker removed her shirt, jeans and Birkenstocks and then lay down on the couch.

It was easier, she says, to do what the boy told her than to fight it. She didn't care about anything anymore. She felt hopeless, powerless and robotic, she said.

"It was like, "Let's get it over with. It's a body.' I was that dispassionate about everything. It wasn't worth an argument or a struggle. I didn't want to deal with any more pressure from a 4-year-old."

The boy leaned in and touched her breast. Then he "touched her vaginal area with his finger," according to the police report. Slicker remembers him doing it but she felt nothing.

The boy's mother walked in. Neither Slicker nor the boy noticed her. The mother said the drapes were drawn, so it took a moment for her eyes to adjust to the darkness.

She noticed a figure on the L-shaped couch, and realized it was Slicker. Her son was sitting between the nanny's legs.

"What are you doing?" the 34-year-old mother said. She said it again, louder.

Her son jumped down and hid behind the couch. It dawned on Slicker that she was naked. She jumped up and said "Oh my God," three times.

She ran into another room and got dressed.

On her way to the police station to turn herself in, Slicker called the parents and left a message saying she was sorry.

The couple was still stunned. After feeding their children and putting them to bed, they sat on the couch, wondering what to do.

"We couldn't believe that she would be a person that would do this type of thing," the father said in the deposition. "We were worried about the fact that she might have to go to prison."

Later that night, Slicker called the boy's parents from jail. Could they post her bail?

"We were dumbfounded," the father said. "We said "Sarah, you need to call your parents. We can't talk anymore.' "

Slicker was charged with lewd and lascivious molestation, a first-degree felony that could have sent her to prison from 61/2 to 30 years.

It was a cliff fall for a girl who had shown so much promise. Slicker's parents refused to believe it was anything but a mistake.

"I don't know that there is a better person," said her father, Michael Slicker, a 25-year resident of the Old Northeast. "We know that Sarah is not a sex offender. Sarah has never approached any child with any sexual or malicious intent, any time, anywhere."

As she waited for the trial to start, Slicker worked in her father's antique book store and took her dog, Bonnie, to the Crescent Lake dog park. That's where she met Kevin Smith, a mechanic. He became her boyfriend.

She told him about the charges, but it was hard. "It was terrifying to consider what other people might be thinking," Slicker said.

Over and over, the incident played out in her dreams like a color reel, only she messed with the footage.

What if she had gotten the child ready for tennis?

What if she had turned off the movie?

What if she hadn't taken her clothes off?

The parents of the 4-year-old didn't buy Slicker's exhaustion explanation.

"She worked for us for nine out of 12 weeks," the mother said. "She had three weeks of paid vacation. She was not making any life-changing decisions. I mean, she's playing with kids. I'm out delivering 15 babies a month and seeing 100 patients a week. She's a college graduate. This is what her degree was in. She's so exhausted she strips down naked? It's a joke."

The trial began in February. The boy did not testify. Slicker did, sobbing through her story.

"She came across like a 4-year-old child herself," said prosecutor Stephanie Bergen, who was pregnant during the trial. "She was just kind of almost clueless about what she was saying and how she was justifying it. She didn't really grasp - I don't know if she'll ever grasp - what she did and the trauma she caused this child."

Slicker's lawyer, Debora Moss had commissioned a psychological analysis of Slicker, who said she was a virgin (Slicker and her family say she was not sexually abused as a child).

The psychologist reported Slicker's "sexuality was nonexistent," she was not a "sexual deviant," and she did not derive sexual pleasure from the incident, the report said. But the jury didn't get to see it because, under Florida law, Slicker could not argue that she had suffered from "diminished capacity."

Jurors immediately agreed something wrong had happened and Slicker needed to be punished. But not all thought she was guilty of molestation. Since she had not touched the boy, it had to be proven that she "enticed" him to touch her. After more than three hours of debate, the jury found Slicker guilty of lewd and lascivious exhibition, a second-degree felony punishable by a maximum of 15 years in prison and a minimum of probation.

"We kind of all went back and forth and they had this word, entice, and "did she entice the child?' " said Joanna Butler, 35, a nurse who served on the jury.

"We decided "No, she didn't.' "

As Slicker's sentencing loomed on Feb. 25, Circuit Judge Brandt Downey III received more than 100 letters.

Former St. Petersburg Mayor Robert L. Ulrich, who attends the same church, wrote that Slicker's "reputation for reliability and integrity has been sterling." Retired Methodist Bishop James Lloyd Knox called her a "sweet but very naive, disorganized young woman" who he believes "when she says hers was not a sexual act."

Many of the letter writers pleaded with Downey to give Slicker probation rather than prison.

"All I ask, on Sarah's behalf, is that you consider the whole person, and not just the isolated event," wrote friend Rachel Price. "Sarah is a sweet, loving, compassionate person who made an error in judgment under stress."

Others urged Downey to punish Slicker, and treat her the same as a man.

"I understand that it is difficult for most persons to accept that women may be pedophiles," wrote Robert L. Arnold, professional development coordinator at the Hospice Institute of the Florida Suncoast. "We wish to see women as benevolent and nurturing. However, Ms. Slicker's behavior was clearly intentional and predatory and her sentencing must be reflective of this."

At Slicker's sentencing, about 200 people crowded into the courtroom. The boy's family passed out stickers that read, "Protect our Children." Many of Slicker's babysitting families sat behind her.

Parishioners from First United Methodist sat on different sides of the courtroom.

The boy's mother told the judge she was worried how the incident would affect her son's perception of women and sex in the future. And she was "overwhelmed" by Slicker's supporters, the mother said. She wondered if they were in denial because they didn't want to think it could happen to their children.

Downey sentenced Slicker to 15 years in prison, but suspended part of it. In the end, he gave her a year in the jail, two years of house arrest and 10 years probation.

"I thought long and hard before I imposed her sentence," Downey said. "You're talking about a relatively young defendant . . . making a terrible mistake."

News of Slicker's conviction and sentencing spread on the Internet with hundreds weighing in on half a dozen blogs. Many thought she had been treated too harshly. Others thought she deserved her fate.

"If you can't disarm a situation where a 4-year-old demands that you get naked with a simple "no' followed by strict instructions to go to his room and wait until his parents get home, then maybe you have not got what it takes to make it in the highly stressful world of babysitting," wrote one person on FARK, a Web site on which an article about Slicker's conviction was read 34,309 times. "Aren't most small children curious about everything?" countered JoeV. "Would it have been "lewd and lascivious' if it had been his mother who complied and showed him her naked body? Bad judgment? Sure. Fire the sitter? Sure. Prison time? I think not."

A few weeks ago, the gynecologist was driving with her son to Lowe's when out of the blue, he asked if Slicker was still in jail. The mother said yes.

The boy, now 5, paused and said that was good. He had jumped down behind the couch, he said, because he thought he did something wrong. "But you know now that you didn't, right?" the mother replied.

"Yes, I didn't do anything bad. She did," the boy answered.

The parents have vowed never to use a nanny again. A grandmother now cares for the boy and his sister.

Slicker should have received more time in jail, the mother said.

"If this had been a man with my daughter, he would have been convicted and put away for the 30 years maximum," the mother said. "But because it was a woman and she claims it was my son's curiosity, we don't even have a molestation charge."

She is incensed by Slicker's argument about her son's behavior. Her pediatrician said some boys are naturally curious at this age.

"She wanted to blame it on everybody else," the mother said. "It's hard to listen to a 23-year-old blame a 4-year-old."

Slicker cried when she heard the mother doesn't think she has taken responsibility.

"I can't imagine feeling any more guilty or upset than I do," Slicker said. "If she could just understand there was nothing sexual, if I could just let her know for her own peace of mind."

In jail, Slicker cleans the bathrooms and visitor's area and helps the GED teacher with inmates getting their diplomas. She has learned to be a little more assertive and she is on an antidepressant, Lexapro.

She will forever be a registered sex offender, though in 20 years she can apply to have the designation removed. Once she gets out of jail on Oct. 14, she must attend counseling and submit to a polygraph exam each year of her treatment. Any contact with children must be supervised until she has completed her treatment. She can never volunteer or work at a school, park, day care or playground, though she can live within 1,000 feet of them.

Slicker is not sure what she will do when she is released, maybe clerical work.

Her thoughts now are on her wedding to Kevin Smith, the man she met at the dog park last summer. They got engaged over the two-way TV cameras during a jail visit recently. They talk about wedding dresses and tiered cakes.

And when her lawyer showed up to visit, Slicker lowered her head and asked her in a whisper, "Are kids going to be able to be at the wedding?"

Teacher Meredith Powell Allegedly Had Sex With Students

Meredith Powell, who taught at Lincoln High School in Tacoma, allegedly performed oral sex on a 15-year-old and, in a separate incident, had sexual contact with a then 15-year-old while the rest of the school was attending an assembly last month.

Court documents obtained by KIRO claim Powell admitted her illegal behavior, though she pleaded not guilty on Friday to two counts of third-degree child rape and one count of communication with a minor for immoral purposes, according to the News Tribune.

The court documents say Powell also allegedly sent one of the students a nude photo of herself in a bathtub through Snapchat.

Police said Powell also sent sexually explicit text messages to a third, 17-year-old student, according to the Seattle Times.

She allegedly sent a text to the 17-year-old's girlfriend apologizing for her "promiscuous" texts.

Former Greene school aide arrested on sex charges
Latest Lady Teacher Sex Scandal:

A former aide at Greene Intermediate Center is in jail after her arrest Tuesday on nine felony charges related to inappropriate sexual activities with special education students she supervised.

Schmeca White, 27, of the 800 block of Huey Street, was taken into custody at her home shortly before noon Tuesday.

Chief Deputy Prosecutor Ken Cotter said White is accused of performing various sexual acts or causing students to perform sex acts in a classroom during their lunch period.

The reported incidents occurred during November and December while the teacher with whom White worked was away from the classroom.

The charges filed Tuesday involve seven students between the ages of 11 and 15, Cotter said. School officials said they were special education students.

White is accused of doing such things as touching a 14-year-old girl’s private parts and holding down the same girl while another student touched her.

The former paraprofessional also is charged with giving a “lap dance” to a 15-year-old boy and making an 11-year-old boy commit a sexual act on her. She also is alleged to have stripped and touched her naked body provocatively in front of the class.

Students also claimed that White had choked a 13-year-old girl to the point that an ambulance was called. White reportedly claimed the girl had an asthma attack, court documents show.

The charges White faces include two counts of child molesting, two counts of sexual misconduct with a minor, sexual battery, criminal deviate conduct and battery.

She also is charged with vicarious sexual gratification and performing sexual conduct in the presence of minors.

“I hope I never see another case like it,” Cotter said Tuesday.

“Sometimes, you really do wonder what’s going on in this world,” said Supt. Joan Raymond of the South Bend Community School Corp.

‘You trust your children are safe’

Kim Gerencser is the parent of a seventh-grader who attends Greene. She said she was shocked when she saw television news reports about the allegations.

“I didn’t know whether or not to run to school and grab my kid,” Gerencser said. “It’s scary to realize it can happen in our school. You trust that your children are safe when they go to school.”

Despite the incident, Gerencser said she still has plenty of confidence in the staff at Greene and believes they are just as shocked as she is.

The two-month investigation revealed White exerted control over the children with threats, according to Cotter.

White is reported to have threatened to harm the students or cause trouble at school if they disclosed what had occurred in the classroom, Cotter said.

The prosecutor said he believed the students took the threats to heart because they came from an authority figure.

Seven to 10 students were normally in the special education classroom during the lunch period, which is about a half-hour long, said Lt. Mark Reihl, an investigator with the Family Violence & Special Victims Unit.

This particular special education class was not integrated with the general student population, Raymond said Tuesday.

No red flags

White was fired in January for an unrelated theft incident, according to Raymond. Criminal charges have not been filed over that matter, details of which Raymond did not reveal.

Students spoke up after they realized White was not returning to the school, Cotter said.

A social worker at Greene contacted St. Joseph County police Feb. 18, which started the investigation.

According to Raymond, a criminal check on each prospective employee of the school corporation is run. Candidates also go through an interview process.

Raymond said a criminal check was run on White when she was hired in 2003 and showed no cause for alarm.

“The school did nothing wrong,” Raymond said. “We have one priority above all others, and that is the safety of the children in our care.

“Regrettably, individuals who have problems along these lines tend to go where children go,” Raymond said. “It’s very, very regrettable. Very, very sad.”

Cotter praised the prompt reporting of school personnel and the cooperation of the students, parents, Greene special education teachers Casey Ickes and Chris Lorenz and school social worker Jennifer Weinberg.

“They made the proper response,” Cotter said. “They’ve been very helpful.”

Reihl had to tell the parents what had happened to their children.

“They were upset and angry,” Reihl said of the students’ parents, who had no idea about the incidents until he told them.

Reihl, who has children, said he didn’t blame them. “I’d react the same way.”

White’s bond is set at $10,000. She is scheduled to make her initial court appearance.

If convicted of all the charges, she could receive a maximum sentence of 112 years in prison.

Omaha Teacher Arrested On Meth Charge

An Omaha teacher has been arrested on a charge of possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver.

Omaha police said Jolene Cortez, a second-grade teacher at Conestoga Elementary, was arrested at her home Monday night.

In court Tuesday afternoon, prosecutors said police went to Cortez's home, near 36th and Orchard streets, Monday evening. She let them in and allowed them to search. Officers found between 2.5 and 3.5 ounces of meth and some cash in Cortez's purse.

Prosecutors said Cortez told officers she had been selling meth to make extra money.

The Class 3 felony charges could bring one to 20 years in jail and a $25,000 fine.

A judge set Cortez's bond at $1,000. Cortez's lawyer said she deserve leniency.

"She's never been arrested, never been in any trouble -- I don't think she's even had a speeding ticket," said attorney Mike Poepsel. "She's very upset and disappointed."

Poepsel said his client understands that she is supposed to set an example as a school teacher, and realizes she faces very serious charges.

"She'd been in good standing with OPS and that's why this is such a traumatic experience for her," Poepsel said.

Omaha Public Schools said she's been teaching at Conestoga for two years after graduating from the University of Nebraska-Omaha in 2002. OPS said it has not had any problems with Cortez, but that she has had a number of absences lately.

"She seemed to have a good rapport with students at Conestoga," said Luanne Nelson, with OPS.

Nelson said there is no indication Cortez brought the drugs to school.

Cortez has been suspended with pay pending the police investigation. The school is sending a note home to parents.

Second Gym Teacher Accused of Taking Bribes to Keep Boys Out of Gym Class - Remember the incident at Ernest Ward Middle School in February where a gym teacher was getting $1 a day to let boys out of gym class but still give them a passing grade? Well, apparently a female teacher at the school was running the same scam! CVops say Tamara Tootle turned herself in last week and will face six counts of bribery. (6ABC ) Police in Pensacola, Florida say Tamara Tootle turned herself in yesterday and faces six counts of bribery. Authorities say she told students at Ernest Ward Middle School during the 2004-2023 school year that they didn't have to dress for her PE class, but could still receive 100 percent for participation by paying a dollar a day. A school district spokesman says investigators learned about Tootle's activities from another former teacher at the school who was arrested back in February on bribery charges. Officials say that teacher could have made thousands of dollars by pulling the same stunt. Tootle has resigned from the school and has been released on bond.

Harlem High Teacher Charged, Resigns

Chase, also a coach at the school, faces charges of sexual assault on a student according to the Sheriff’s Office, a felony.

The Columbia County Sheriff's Office says the teen's mother filed the report.

Columbia County School Superintendent Tommy Price says he found out about the complaint today. In a press release, Price says the teacher has resigned from her job Harlem High. He adds that a report will be filed with the Professional Standard’s Commission.

Teacher sex with 18-year-old students not illegal

The teacher, Matthew Hirschfelder, was charged with first-degree sexual misconduct with a minor for allegedly having sex with a graduating senior in 2006. He challenged a judge’s refusal to dismiss his case, noting that because the student was 18, she wasn’t a minor.

A three-judge panel of the Washington Court of Appeals unanimously agreed. While the law was written vaguely, a review of the legislative history clearly shows that lawmakers intended to criminalize contact between teachers and 16- or 17-year-old students, the court said.

The state’s code of professional conduct for teachers still prohibits any sexual advance toward or contact with pupils, whatever their age, and they can be fired for it. Sexual contact with students younger than 16 is considered child rape or molestation.

“There’s nothing equivocal about teacher ethics: You don’t have sex with a student, period,” said Hirschfelder’s attorney, Rob Hill of Olympia.

Hirschfelder, who was 33 at the time, denies any sexual relationship occurred.

Before 2001, state law barred anyone at least five years older than a 16- or 17-year-old from abusing a supervisory relationship to coerce the teen into having sexual relations. That law applied to teachers as well as anyone else — such as a teen’s boss or coach.

However, the law required prosecutors to prove that coercive tactics were used, such as the promise of a better grade — making it difficult to go after teachers who had relations with a student they didn’t directly supervise.

In 2001, lawmakers decided they wanted to close that loophole. They passed a bill outlawing all sexual contact between teachers and students “at least 16 years old.” The new language didn’t clarify what happened if the student was over 18.

The Grays Harbor Prosecutor’s Office argued that the law should be interpreted as covering all students older than 16. People are allowed to attend public high schools in Washington until they are 21.

In an opinion authored by Judge Marywave Van Deren, the appeals court rejected that argument, saying the law was intended to criminalize only contact with 16- and 17-year-old students, and that the age of majority in Washington is 18.

“The name of the statute is ’sexual misconduct with a minor,”’ Hill noted.

Grays Harbor County Prosecutor Stew Menefee did not immediately return a call from The Associated Press, but he told The Daily World newspaper of Aberdeen on Tuesday that he would consider appealing.

Several teachers have been prosecuted under the law for having sex with 18-year-old students, said Seattle lawyer David Hansen, who filed a friend-of-the-court brief on behalf of the Washington Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.

In 2007, former Hoquiam wrestling and football coach Todd Hoiness was sentenced to five months in jail after he pleaded guilty to sexual misconduct with a minor. That case too involved an 18-year-old student.

Hirschfelder has not been able to work as a teacher since late 2006, when he was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation by the school board. He was arrested and charged in spring 2007, after the former choir student told police she had a monthslong affair with him that began shortly before she graduated.

Hill said Hirschfelder has been tuning pianos to make ends meet.

Teacher Accused of Sending Nude Photos to Student

Melinda Dennehy, a 41-year-old mother of two from Hampstead, turned herself into police on Friday and was released on a $10,000 bond, the Boston Herald reported. School officials at Londonderry High School suspended Dennehy on Wednesday.

The teen told investigators Dennehy sent the photos to his e-mail account about two months ago and "continually sent him text messages," some of which offered to perform a sex act on him, according to police documents.

Authorities said that Dennehy also "kissed him twice on separate occasions," according to the Herald.

After the photos circulated among students, a concerned parent passed them on to faculty members, who identified Dennehy and notified police.

"I didn't believe it -- I thought she was a good teacher," student Shaina Pierce told NECN.

Police ordered Dennehy to stay away fom anyone under the age of 16.

Louisiana Teachers Shelley Dufresne, Rachel Respess Charged In Student Sex Abuse Case

Shelley Dufresne, 32, and Rachel Respess, 24, both teach at Destrehan High School in St. Charles Parish. They are each charged with one count of carnal knowledge of a juvenile, according to the St. Charles Herald Guide.

WDSU quoted an unnamed source who implied that the victim was involved in a threesome with the teachers.

According to WGNO:

Multiple sources say the student, then 16 and now 17, met the two teachers at the Kenner home where some of their sexual encounters were videotaped.

Dufresne, who has taught at the school for 10 years, was arrested Tuesday and released from St. Charles Parish jail on $200,000 bond later that night. According to WGNO, the mother of three is under house arrest, and is not allowed to leave her home except for continued intensive mental health treatment, doctors’ appointments, and church.

Respass, who is in her second year teaching at the school, turned herself in on Wednesday.

Police began their investigation last Friday after educators learned that a male student had been "bragging to other students that he was having a sexual relationship with teachers," according to a St. Charles Sheriff's Office report.

WDSU reports that the teachers were put on paid leave last Friday after the allegations came to light.

Parents aren't taking the allegations lightly.

“Unfortunately as a parent of a son that attends Destrehan High School, it’s a little overwhelming at times, and my son is taking it difficult as well, but I think the whole school is taking it difficultly,” Destrehan High School parent Antonio Morales told WGNO. “When anything happens here at Destrehan, all of Destrehan suffers.”

Maria Guzman Hernandez, a 32-year-old teacher at a Florida Catholic school, was charged with sexual battery on a child after she allegedly admitted that she had sex with a 15-year-old student. Authorities said the boy's mother knew about the relationship and approved of it.
