About What's Under the Icon At the Top

Dance performers highlight the Wodaabe Geerewol celebration. The dancers, selected for their physical beauty, paint their faces with ochre makeup and use kohl to emphasize the whiteness of their teeth and the power of their eyes. Lining up shoulder to shoulder, the dancers begin to chant in hypnotic harmony, "awakening" magical potions they have taken and making them "rise to the heart and show themselves in the blood." The Wodaabe believe that their special birthright of beauty has been handed down from their ancestors, Adam and Adama. Men of the African Ark calendar, Pomegranate
